Forestry and Sustainable Land Management

This article is based on a report jointly prepared by the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and the Ministry for the Environment as the New Zealand country study for the OECD Workshop on Forestry, Agriculture and the Environment, held in Madrid in October 1994.

The New Zealand forestry industry encompasses logging, lumber, pulp and paper, panel and other manufactured products. In 1994, New Zealand’s forestry export receipts totalled $2.6 billion, representing 12.9% of total merchandise export revenues. The sector is the country’s third largest export earner, after meat and dairy products. Forestry and first-stage processing provided employment for 23,400 people as at February 1994. The sector contributes around 6% of New Zealand’s GDP. This compares with pastoral farming and horticulture, which together contribute around 5%, and agricultural processing, which accounts for 6%.

This paper starts with a brief description of the New Zealand forestry estate including its recent expansion, then looks at some of the issues at the interface between forestry, agriculture and the environment in New Zealand.
