Recreation and access
Both natural and planted forests have important values for wide ranging public recreational pursuits. While access through State natural forest is generally provided by statute, convenient access to these forests may require the crossing of privately owned farm or forest land. Such access is a privilege, carries with it responsibility, and can impose costs on the land owner.
The main owners of planted forests have usually restricted public access at certain times. Restrictions apply during periods of high fire risk, when harvesting or other operations are being undertaken, or during other periods of potential danger to the public, forest workers, or to the forest itself. Many farmers readily provide access, on a voluntary basis, to forested areas of their land, while overseas tourists are attracted by the freedom to walk in New Zealands natural forests.
