Objectives

  • To develop a comprehensive environmental management programme for the North Otago area.
  • To encourage the adoption of environmental sustainable management practices by farmers and local industry.
  • To promote and update the ]and management guidelines already prepared.
  • To develop and implement models for farm accreditation and to set environmental standards.
  • To improve the marketability of North Otago produce through the use of a co-ordinated industry/producer approach to environmental standards.

Process

  • Employing fulltime sustainability co-ordinator.
  • Develop farm accreditation standards.
  • Survey community perceptions.
  • Encourage the formation of sustainability groups.
  • Targeted monitoring.
  • Bimonthly newsletter.
  • Hold regular workshops.

Background

  • Initially formed by the Otago Regional Council and MAF Policy. Involves representatives from both organisations and seven farmers.
  • Has now taken on a life and enthusiasm of its own.

Achievements in the Past Year

  • Ran five workshops on sustainability throughout North Otago.
  • Involved a farm visit and concept pyramids.
  • Produced a comprehensive set of sustainable land management guidelines for North Otago.
  • Developed an ongoing project to adopt more sustainable practices in the North Otago downlands.
  • Applied to the Sustainable Management Fund of MfE.
