2.3 Research Agencies
2.3.1 Outline
A survey was sent to eighteen research agencies and research funders who were known to have funded or undertaken research into organic production or who had this capability. They included Universities, Crown Research Institutes, Polytechnics as well as various funding bodies. Replies were received from 15.
A difficulty raised by a number of the respondents was in the assessment of the amount of research undertaken for organic production in that much research may be perceived to be of value to organic farmers. A breakdown of research between that primarily targeted for organic production and that perceived to be of relevance to organic producers or the organic industry was however requested by MAF Policy. The following definition for organic research was provided to assist research agencies in this breakdown:
Organic Research is that which is specifically targeted for the production, processing, handling and marketing of organic products.
