d. Research programmes

Since July 1990, most research sponsored by central government has been funded through the Public Good Science Fund (PGSF). Central government funding in 1993/94 for research on sustainable land management has been estimated at $102.7 million ($91.3 million excluding GST). Of this, $61.3 million was in directly related programmes and $41.4 million was for programmes indirectly related to sustainable land management. See Appendix Table A1. This covers research funded by the PGSF as well as universities, government departments, and government trusts. These figures also include forestry research, although this is a relatively small proportion of the total. Regional councils supported $3.5 million of research on sustainable land management, but this is included below under regional planning (see 1h).
