6. Trade measures
In general, New Zealand does not restrict the importation of agricultural products for environmental reasons. The only exceptions are sanitary and phytosanitary restrictions which are necessary to protect animal and plant health, and some controls on imports and exports of endangered flora and fauna as part of New Zealand's obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In addition, exports of indigenous timber products are restricted under the Forests Amendment Act 1993 and certain Export Prohibition Regulations. (Further details are provided in section II.4 above.) These export controls are applied in conjunction with restrictions on domestic production in order to conserve exhaustible indigenous forests.
