Abstract: A review of the potential for irrigation and water storage in the Shag Valley has been carried out. This review has also looked at the potential water sources for supply from areas outside the catchment. The review was triggered by the extending drought of 1998/99 and by concerns over longer term trends thas may be associated with climate change.

Abstract: This report describes the scoping study undertaken for the Hakataramea Irrigation Society Inc. The Hakataramea Valley is very water short and subject to limitations on existing irrigation takes in most seasons. The Hakataramea is well known as a trout and salmon fishery. Any significant increase in water for irrigation will rely on either large water storage dams or transfer of water from outside the catchment.

Abstract: The objective of this report is to address the following questions based on a review of existing groundwater nitrate data held by Environment Canterbury: What is the range of nitrate concentrations found in Canterbury groundwater? Are there any spatial patterns to the concentrations and if so how can these patterns be interpreted? How do concentrations vary with well depth? What seasonal variations in nitrate concentrations are observed? Are there any discernible long-term trends in the data?

Abstract: This report presents the analysis and interpretation of groundwater quality data collected over the last 16 years in the Christchurch-West Melton groundwater management zone. The data was analysed for spatial and temporal trends, and compared to the Drinking Water Standards for NZ 2000. The information shows the general high quality of groundwater but also shows that poorer quality groundwater does occur in some areas, mainly as a result of land use activities.

Abstract: The ability to accurately project the likely demand on water resources by creating a vision of New Zealand agriculture and forestry landuse is critical to the future development of many regions. Regions with affordably sustainable water resources will have a distinct advantage in attracting economic development finance from the investment community. Regions with increasing demands on water resources will have to apply logical development programmes to meet the demand and optimise the use of the resources under their stewardship. This process exposes a range of issues to consider including the environmental sustainability of certain land uses and their economic viability.
