Abstract
: Irrigation and associated changes in land use, as indicated by the scenarios, can be expected to bring many social benefits to rural areas where irrigation takes place and also at a regional level with the development of infrastructure, services and processing industries. Benefits will flow in particular from the on and off farm workforce of up to 8,000 and possibly as high as 15,000. But there are also potential dis-benefits as communities adjust to changes in land uses and associated services.
