Abstract: This report applies hydrochemical methods to determine the ages and sources of groundwater in the Canterbury Plains. The information is presented in dual maps for each hydrogeological area, one showing well locations and depths, the other the ages and sources of the groundwater. The results reveal the nature of the systems and offer potentially powerful tools to assist with sustainable development of the groundwater resources.

Abstract: This report summarises environmental aspects of New Zealand's agricultural policy reforms and describes current agri-environmental programmes. Brief descriptions and budget are provided for programmes addressing general agri-environmental issues, soil quality, water quality and allocation, flora and fauna, land protection and improvement, and trade measures. This report identifies where "polluter pays" or "user pays" policies have been implemented.

Abstract: This report is presented in two volumes. Volume 1 reports the objectives of the project, the use of analytical procedures for solving water allocation problems, the selection of the particular modelling approach chosen for the analytical phase of the project, and the model formulations. Interim results from an application to the Tekapo catchment are presented. Final results for the whole Upper Waitaki catchment are described in Volume 2.

Abstract: This project is part of the Ministry for the Environment's Water Allocation Programme. The programme is aimed at enabling sustainable development of New Zealand's water resources by removing unnecessary constraints to water availability and promoting improved efficiency of water use. A potential method to improve the economic efficiency of resource use is allowing users to transfer their allocations, thereby moving the water to those who value it most. This is not happening at present due to a number of institutional and attitudinal factors. To deal with these, we need first to understand if and when users would transfer their permits.

Abstract: The objective of the AIG is to undertake a study into the feasibility of developing a community water suppl scheme for irrigation of suitable areas of the Lower Awatere Valley. The study is to provide sufficient detail to allow the AIG to decide on the advisability of proceeding with a particular water supply option.

Abstract: The purpose of the feasibility study is to provide the AIG with information to confirm whether such a scheme is feasible. To achieve this objective AIG has commissioned URS to investigate the need for and feasibility of a community based water supply scheme for the land lying within the Lower Awatere and Blind River Valleys
