7. Summary

This review has identified a number of factors that may be important in the New Zealand context of animals grazing pasture. Given that lactation is likely to be the most sensitive class of animal/physiological state, it is appropriate to consider some research that may highlight issues of particular concern to New Zealand farmers. Hence, the factors of most interest are:

  • What is the impact of moisture content of pasture on water intake?
  • What is the impact of restricting water supply on feed intake and milk production?
  • What is the impact of pasture potassium content on water intake?
  • What is the impact of faecal contamination of trough water on voluntary water intake?
  • What is the impact of iron content of water on voluntary water intake?
