The five waterbodies that have the potential to add the greatest amount to farmgate GDP after further irrigation development are:
- Tukituki/Ruataniwha Plains – Hawke’s Bay
- Waitaki River - Canterbury
- Rakaia River - Canterbury
- Hurunui River - Canterbury
- Wairau catchment - Marlborough
