Biotechnology
There are many varieties of biotechnology research being carried out in New Zealand. This activity is oriented toward both agricultural bioscience and human health. Genetic modification (GM) is one aspect of this but biotechnology is not limited to GM.
Some of areas of current research include:
- Health - new ways to understand, diagnose and treat diseases.
- Agriculture - identifying elite breeding lines, better biological control of pests, and creating disease-resistant crops.
- Environment - using organisms to clean up toxic chemicals, using DNA detection to improve biosecurity, and reducing methane emissions from animals.
- Justice - using DNA techniques to catch criminals.
- Manufacturing - creating new biomaterials and using organisms to produce products cheaply
MAF funds research, some of which includes topics in biotechnology.
Biotechnology Strategy
The Government released its Biotechnology Strategy on 26 May 2003. The strategy sets out a vision and direction for the development of biotechnology in New Zealand under the theme of "a foundation for development with care". It recommends actions in three areas:
- community engagement
- growing the sector
- regulation that provides robust safeguards and allows innovation.
Biotechnology Taskforce
For the Government's innovation framework to be successful, specific strategies must be developed jointly with those directly involved in target sectors such as biotechnology. The commercial sector should shape the direction of development in the sector, with the Government facilitating where it is best positioned and where it can be most effective. The Biotechnology Sector Taskforce will provide a focal point for this partnership.
The purpose of the Biotechnology Sector Taskforce is to agree priorities and develop action plans for stimulating the growth and international competitiveness of New Zealand's biotechnology sector. This should include:
- identifying international trends on which New Zealand's biotechnology sector might capitalise;
- developing strategies for building high-value technologies and internationally competitive business in New Zealand's biotechnology sector;
- highlighting issues and areas where Government action might enhance the development of New Zealand's biotechnology sector;
- acting as a focal point for a partnership between the Government and the commercial sector.
