Deer industry receives Government Grant to improve productivity

A project designed to improve deer farming productivity through initiating better management, animal performance, economic returns and industry strength has been given a Government grant of $120,650.

The project is being undertaken by the Invercargill-based Deer South Incorporated.

It has been given the funding by the MAF Sustainable Farming Fund which was set up to help the development of projects benefiting the environmental and economic well-being of the rural sector and its communities.

MAF Sustainable Farming Fund Manager, Kevin Steel says the scheme will involve the expansion of deer farming benchmarking production systems to key area and farmer groups across New Zealand.

He says identifying top performers, analysing and then applying similar management procedures will result in a lift in the performance of the industry.

The project will last for three years and be divided into distinct phases beginning with the establishment of co-ordinated groups in key locations and finishing with data analysis on an industry basis. At that stage new developments in on-farm management and technology development from leading farmers and business will be promoted.
