Error in annual forestry production and trade statistics for the years ended March 2007 and 2008

An erratum for the Annual forestry production and trade statistics for the years ended March 2007 and March 2008 was issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry today. The annual release commentary and statistical tables have been corrected and re-released, with details of the amendments.

The error occurred in sawn timber production data and was a result of data estimation for some non-responding sawmills being omitted from the final figure.

The percentage change in the volume of sawn timber production for the year ended March 2008 compared to the volume for the previous year has been revised from a decrease of 6.2 percent to an increase of 0.9 percent.

For the year ended March 2007 the percentage change in the volume of sawn timber produced compared with the volume of production for the year ended March 2006 has been revised from an increase of 1.1 percent to an increase of 1.6 percent.

This error also fed into the sawn timber quarterly production data. Corrected details for this publication will be released in conjunction with the forestry production and trade statistical release for the September 2008 quarter. A revisions table detailing the size of the revisions will be issued at this time.

MAF has reviewed the compilation processes for the forestry statistical releases and the implemented changes to the methodologies to mitigate the risk of such an error occurring in the future.
